In sports tech news, La Liga has been using its app to follow footy fans around to see where they’re watching illegal streams. I can't work out if it's an indicator of a dystopian data driven future or the winning entry to next year's Sport Technology Awards.
Spain’s data protection agency fined Spain’s top league 250,000 euros for using the league’s phone app to spy on its fans. The league dispute this framing and are fighting the case.
The app used was described in Gizmodo as a sort of Shazam for illegal feeds, as the league’s data team followed fans to bars playing matches on television without a licence.
But it's ok, it was all in the small print...
